Volunteer

There are a variety of ways to volunteer with 4-H.  Have a special skill or interest?  Share it with local youth by holding a workshop or even starting a team or club!   Please look through the volunteer opportunities below and contact Mrs. Keri Hobbs at 229-924-4476 or klgandy@uga.edu if you would like to become a 4-H volunteer!

4-H Project Achievement Leader:                                        Weekly for Seven Weeks
Project Achievement is an annual competition that provides 4-H’ers with an opportunity to build confidence and strengthen public speaking skills as they prepare a presentation on the topic of their choice.  Mentor these students and provide them with instruction and support on their projects.  You will be paired with one to two students based on shared interests and preferred age group.  Read about the Project Achievement Leader experience by clicking here: http://sumtercounty4-h.blogspot.com/2011/03/project-achievementfrom-volunteers.html.   
Volunteers Needed: Monday- Thursday 3 pm- 5 pm.  Only needed between January and March.
Volunteer Shift: 2 hours per week for seven week period.  Plus one hour for competition. (15 hour total time commitment). 
Requirements: Minimum age of 18 and completed background check. 

4-H Club Project Leader                                           One Time, As Needed, Monthly, Yearly
Share your own special interest or skill with youth of Sumter County to promote growth and education.  Projects may range from community service projects to subjects such as the environment, safety, health, wildlife, arts and crafts, social activities, etc.   

Volunteers Needed: Year round
Volunteer Shift: Flexible with a minimum of 2 hours
Requirements: Minimum age of 18.  Completed background check.  Special interest or skill is preferred but not required.

4-H Overnight Chaperone Volunteer                                                                      As Needed
Mentor youth and serve as a chaperone at one of 4-H’s many overnight events held throughout the year.  Opportunities range from week long summer camps to weekend retreats. 

Volunteers Needed: Throughout the year
Volunteer Shift: One to five days
Requirements: Minimum age of 18.  Completed background check and overnight chaperone certification.

4-H Classroom Club Leader                                                                           Monthly
Provide 4-H learning experiences directly to 5th grade youth in the classroom.  Topics include health, science, the environment, and citizenship.  Work with teachers to supplement lesson plans with fun, educational experiences.  Encourage students to actively participate in other 4-H opportunities.  Serve as a liaison between county extension staff and teachers.

Volunteers Needed: Monday through Friday 8 am – 3 pm (dependent upon teacher and school schedule)
Volunteer Shift: 2 hours per month
Requirements: Minimum age of 18.  Completed background check and any training needed for this position.


Transportation Volunteer:                                                                           Weekly
Provide transportation to and from meetings and events.  Often the limiting factor in participation by youth is transportation.  Help us expand the number of opportunities for Sumter County youth by providing them with a means of transportation to get to 4-H clubs and activities.

Volunteers Needed: Can vary, but typically Monday- Thursday. 3 pm- 5 pm
Volunteer Shift: 1 hour shift per week
Requirements: Minimum age of 18. Completed background check.


4-H Team Leader:                                                                   Weekly for 2 Month Period
Lead 4-H’ers to competitions across the state in an area that fits your interests.  Opportunities are available in Challenge Bowl, Cotton Boll & Consumer Judging, Horse Club, Poultry Judging, and many other areas.  Prepare and coach weekly practices.  Provide instruction and support at competitions.

Volunteers Needed: Monday- Thursday 3 pm- 6 pm.  Seasonal with months depending on activity.
Volunteer Shift: 2 to 3 hours per week for 2 month period.  Plus day of competition. (30 hour total time commitment).
Requirements: Minimum age of 18, completed background check, and any training needed (dependent upon activity). 

Special Events Volunteer                                                                              As Needed
Special events volunteers are notified throughout the year to assist with special projects as needed.  This may include serving as a judge for a local 4-H cooking competition, seeking donations from potential sponsors, or working at a fundraiser.

Volunteer Shift: Flexible
Requirements: Simply a desire to help Sumter County 4-H!

Operation Desert Support                                                                           As Needed
Started by Senior 4-H'er Morgan Bowen, Operation Desert Support sends Christmas stockings to U.S. troops who will be deployed during the holidays.  You can take part in this project by attending one of ODS's many workshops, where volunteers sew and decorate the stockings.  Visit http://www.operationdesertsupport.com/.

Requirements: Simply a desire to show support for U.S. deployed troops.
