2011 National 4-H Week Celebration goes out with a BANG
Sumter County 4-H had great events happening throughout the week of October 4 to celebrate National 4-H Week. The week concluded on Thursday, October 6, with a 4-H Sweet Potato Show Down and Open House. The event included five dishes from 4-H’ers, which were judged on nutrition, presentation, appeal, creativity, and flavor. The dishes included muffins, pancakes, creamy sweet potatoes, salad, and “sweet” sweet potatoes. The winners of the contest were Jean and Anna Moates with their Sweet Potato and Pineapple Salad in the adult division and Hannah Becton with her “Sweet” Sweet Potato in the youth division.
Winners of the Sweet Potato Show-Down, essay contest, multimedia contest, pop tab/pop can/empty ink jet cartilage contests were announced at the closing of the Open House. 4-H’er, Hannah Becton collected 7 lbs. of pop tabs for donation to Ronald McDonald Houses. Ronald McDonald Houses provide a “home away from home” atmosphere so families can stay close by their hospitalized child. The collections of pop tabs generate funds to support the operational cost of these houses. Sumter 4-H collects pop tabs year-round and welcome community support of dropping off pop tabs of any amount to the Sumter County Cooperative Extension Office.
Also in celebration of National 4-H week, Wednesday, October 5, was National Youth Science Day, and Sumter County 4-H honored the day by participating in the National Youth Science Experiment, Wired for Wind. The students built windmill prototypes and learned about renewable energy. On Tuesday, October 4, Sumter County 4-H hosted a Family Percentage Night at Subway and featured information about Sumter 4-H and ways to Live W(H)ealthy.
